This post is intended to be published in June 12, 2013. Ten years after, its finally public.
It is synonymous with the word freedom. In 1898 Philippines was free from Spain. Then comes the Americans then we are freed again. When Marcos was seated in 1972 we are again freed after the Edsa revolution. Political wise we Filipinos are free. We are free to vote and express our views.
“The declaration was never recognized by either the United States or Spain.”
but what is freedom?
When the echoes of the Philippine Independence Day, June 12th, reverberate across the nation, we’re reminded of the courage, the sacrifice, and the relentless spirit of those who fought for our sovereignty. Yet, it’s worth noting that this declaration of freedom was never recognized by either the United States or Spain. This brings us to the question – what truly defines freedom?
In this day and age, as we navigate through life under the guise of “freedom,” have we truly achieved it, or is it just a façade? This article was not initially intended to be penned ten years ago, yet the significance and timeliness of the question compelled me to put my thoughts to paper.
Freedom: A Tapestry of Definitions
The concept of freedom is not monolithic. It wears different faces, depending on the perspective you view it from. Philosophically, politically, legally, and even personally, freedom carries varied definitions and implications.
Freedom, in its most basic essence, is the right to express one’s free will and make decisions without constraint. It’s the liberty to think, speak, and act according to your beliefs, your values, your dreams. However, freedom is not a one-size-fits-all concept – it’s a tapestry of interpretations woven from the threads of our diverse experiences and perspectives.
Freedom Through Different Lenses
In the realm of politics, freedom is the assurance of rights and privileges that allow citizens to live without fear of unjust punishment or restriction. It’s about having a voice and using it without fear of retribution. It’s about participating in the democratic process, electing leaders, and shaping the future of the nation.
In the context of human rights, freedom is the assurance that no matter your race, religion, gender, or social status, you are treated with dignity and respect. It’s about equality and fairness, ensuring that every person has the same opportunities to thrive and succeed.
When viewed from a philosophical angle, freedom is about choice and will. It’s about the ability to navigate your life’s journey, making decisions that mold your destiny. It’s the freedom to think, to question, to seek knowledge, and to express your thoughts and ideas.
The Reality of Freedom
Freedom, in all its glory, is a beautiful ideal. However, it’s not an absolute state, but rather a continuum. No society is entirely free, just as no individual is entirely unfree. It’s about the degree of freedom we experience and how we perceive it.
So, are you truly free? This isn’t a question with a straightforward answer. It’s an invitation to introspection, a call to examine your life and your society critically. It’s about recognizing the areas where freedom thrives and identifying where it’s stifled.
The concept of freedom is as complex as it is profound. Understanding it requires a deep dive into our perceptions, our experiences, and our societal structures. It calls for an open mind and an open heart. As we commemorate our Independence Day, let’s not just celebrate our freedom but also strive to understand it, appreciate it, and work towards expanding it.
In the end, freedom is not merely a state of being but a journey, a constant striving towards an ideal. It’s about breaking barriers, challenging norms, and standing up for what is right. So, as we reflect on our freedom, let’s also renew our commitment to fostering a society where freedom, in its truest sense, can flourish for all.
Freedom: A Personal Perception
Our understanding of freedom is also shaped by our personal experiences and perspectives. For instance, for someone who has lived under the shadow of oppression or discrimination, freedom may mean the right to live without fear, while for someone who has been economically disadvantaged, freedom might mean financial independence.
In my personal journey, freedom has taken on different meanings at different stages. It has been my right to express my thoughts without fear, to choose my path without judgment, and to dream without limitations. It is the freedom to be me, in all my uniqueness and diversity.
Freedom in the Digital Age
In today’s digital age, the concept of freedom has taken on new dimensions. It’s not just about physical or political freedom; it’s also about digital freedom. The freedom to access information, to connect with others across the globe, to create and share ideas in the digital space. However, this digital freedom also comes with its challenges such as cyber threats, misinformation, and digital divide, which we must address to ensure that freedom thrives in the online world as well.
Freedom and Responsibility
While we cherish our freedoms, it’s also important to remember that freedom comes with responsibility. The freedom to express does not include the freedom to harm or hate. The freedom to act does not include the freedom to infringe upon the rights of others. As we exercise our freedoms, we must also respect the freedom of others.
The Road to Freedom: A Collective Effort
Achieving a society where freedom truly prevails for all is not the task of a single individual, group, or government. It’s a collective effort, a shared responsibility. It calls for empathy, understanding, and respect for diversity. It requires us to challenge the status quo, to stand against injustices, and to advocate for those whose freedoms are curtailed.
“Freedom is not a gift, but a right. A right that we must constantly strive to protect, nurture, and expand. It is an ongoing process, a constant endeavor.”
Filipina Wanderer
Freedom and Culture
As a Filipina wanderer, I have traveled far and wide, exploring different cultures and societies. It has made me realize that freedom is also about cultural expression. The freedom to celebrate one’s cultural heritage, to share it with the world, and to have it respected and acknowledged by others.
The richness of Filipino culture, our traditions, our food, our music, and our language, is a source of pride for us. It is our freedom to express and enjoy these aspects of our culture that make us unique and contribute to our national identity.
There’s a liberating feeling in relishing the flavors of adobo or lechon, in dancing the Tinikling, or in singing a heartfelt rendition of a traditional kundiman. These are expressions of our cultural freedom, and they are as vital to our understanding of freedom as our political and civil liberties.
Freedom in the Workplace
Freedom also extends to our professional lives. It’s about the freedom to pursue our passions, to innovate, to express our ideas, and to be respected and rewarded for our work. As a digital marketing professional, I’ve experienced how the digital landscape can either constrain or liberate us.
In my years of working in the industry, I’ve seen how important it is for organizations to foster a culture of freedom. One where employees feel empowered to think creatively, to take risks, and to speak their minds. I’ve seen how this freedom can lead to innovation, growth, and success.
Nurturing Freedom
As we reflect on the concept of freedom, let’s also think about how we can nurture it in our own lives and in our society. Let’s educate ourselves and others, let’s challenge prejudices and biases, and let’s stand up for justice and equality.
In my journey, I have come to believe that freedom is not a gift, but a right. A right that we must constantly strive to protect, nurture, and expand. It is an ongoing process, a constant endeavor.
Freedom is You
Finally, remember that you are an embodiment of freedom. With every choice you make, every word you speak, and every action you take, you are exercising your freedom. Cherish it, respect it, use it wisely, and never take it for granted.
